Spanish Cuisine in Surrey - A Tasty Way to Practice Your Language Skills

Updated: Aug 28, 2024

¡Hola!

One of the first things that I did when I arrived in Surrey was look about for the best, most authentic Spanish cuisine that I could find. Lucky for me (and now you!) I came across two restaurants in Guildford that I want to share with you today, not only for their delicious food - but to give you an insight into how visiting them is one of the best ways to quickly improve your Spanish.

Why Combine Spanish Learning with Local Cuisine?

Before we dive into the local food scene, let's talk about why exploring Spanish cuisine is an excellent language learning strategy:

  1. Real-world vocabulary practice: Learn food-related terms in context.

  2. Cultural immersion: Understanding Spanish-speaking cultures through their food.

  3. Conversation opportunities: Practice ordering in Spanish and chatting with native speakers.

  4. Motivation boost: Make language learning a delicious and rewarding experience.

Now, let's explore the tasty Spanish and Latin American offerings in Guildford!

Top Spanish and Latin American Restaurants in Guildford

Located right on Market Street in Guildford, De Nada offers authentic Spanish tapas.

When you visit, challenge yourself to practise these phrases by asking:

  • "Me gustaría probar las tapas, por favor." (I'd like to try the tapas, please.)

  • "¿Cuál es el plato del día?" (What's the dish of the day?)

This cozy Latin American eatery based on Chapel Street, Guildford, is known for its delicious tapas and paella (and is one of my all time favourites!)

Practice your Spanish by asking:

  • "¿Qué tapas me recomienda?" (Which tapas do you recommend?)

  • "¿Cuál es el secreto de su paella?" (What's the secret to your paella?)

  • "¿Puedo ver la carta de vinos, por favor?" (Can I see the wine list, please?)

  • "¿Cuánto tiempo tarda en prepararse la paella?" (How long does it take to prepare the paella?)

How to Make the Most of Your Culinary Language Adventures

  1. Learn key food vocabulary: Before dining out, review words for common ingredients and dishes.

  2. Practice ordering in Spanish: Challenge yourself to place your entire order in Spanish.

  3. Engage in conversation: Chat with servers or shop owners about the food, asking for recommendations or about the origins of dishes.

  4. Keep a food journal in Spanish: Write about your culinary experiences to practice your writing skills.

  5. Share your experiences: Use your Spanish skills to leave reviews for the restaurants you visit.

Savour the Language, Savour the Flavours

Exploring Spanish cuisine in Guildford is not just about satisfying your taste buds – it's a fantastic way to enhance your language skills and deepen your cultural understanding. From ordering tapas to discussing ingredients at local markets, every culinary adventure is an opportunity to practice Spanish in a real-world, enjoyable context. Plus, if you do end up going to either De Nada or La Casita - let them know that you saw on my website - I may get some free tapas!
